School of Dentistry: Geriatric Dentistry Fellowship

Mission Statement: 

This is a two year training program to prepare dentists with the specific skills needed to treat geriatric patients; educate them regarding the medically compromised older adult and the behavioral and psychosocial needs associated with aging in regards to dental management; and conduct independent research.


The two year Geriatric Dentistry Fellowship program recruits two dental fellows a year. The main objectives of the program is to enhance the basic principles of geriatric medicine; applying the principles of geriatric assessment to the oral care patient setting, understanding key aspects of neurology, rheumatology, pharmacology, cardiology, urology, and psychiatry as they apply to older patients; comprehending the major geriatric syndromes such as osteoporosis, arthritis and neuropathies and their implications in dental patient care. Fellows are involved in teaching dental students in a clinical setting especially in the area of oral diagnosis and oral medicine. They are also involved in the geriatric dental clinic offered in nursing homes and are able to manage geriatric dental patients for their oral diseases in nursing home settings.
